Every step of the production process for these Sekizuka Hakimono Zouri, from the sourcing of raw materials to the final steps of handmade construction– is done by footwear artisan Shinji Sekizuka in Iwakura, Kyoto.
The bamboo straw footbed is breathable yet firm, the EVA sole adds a modern layer of resilience, and the sheep leather hanao (strap) is hand-padded with cotton.

History:
Zouri originated as everyday footwear in Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868). Mr. Sekizuka is recontextualizing this deeply traditional type of hakimono (footwear) for life in modern society.
